Observing young people across the way
University students filled with promise
With hope elicited in dreams they hold
That world might become a better place,
Positive contributions they want to make.
Reminiscence of my days like them
From so many long past years ago,
Marching for peace and civil rights
Long past due equal rights for women
Issues still not realized fifty years later.
Periodically engage with these students
Listen to their feelings about our world
Opinions about environment, civil rights
Feel political discourse too far removed
Too focused on partisan cultural divides.
Hope they make difference in our world
Badly needed at this historical juncture
When so many issues need to be resolved,
Reminiscence, how slowly things change.
Walking among remaining flower blooms
Underneath afternoon clear cerulean sky
While listening to melodic creek flows
As leaves change color and begin to fall,
Perfection experienced in late summer day.
Scenic thoughts of nature’s evolving beauty
Changes in seasons, their distinctive characters
Each one brings, arriving when its time beckons,
Appreciation for each’s particular uniqueness
Always changing, and singularly quite different.
Attentive now to present day character,
Multicolored wildflowers still in bloom
Trees remaining cloaked in green leaves
Moderate temperatures, neither hot or cold
Cerulean sky, perfectly devoid of any clouds.
Pleasant stroll on this late summer day
Observing nature in its present state
At moment between summer and fall,
Always picturesque under cerulean skies.
